Iznik Ottoman Quiver

$430.00

Ottoman-inspired mounted archery quiver with floral detailing

Description

The distinctive shape of this quiver was common for centuries across the middle and far east for horseback archery. The decorative elements on this piece were inspired by a mid 17th-century quiver on display at the Dresden State Art Collections, with the “quatre-fleurs” motifs made famous by artisans in the İznik region of Turkey.

Features:

– The quiver is made from 8-oz veg-tan leather, with the ornate designs carved and tooled entirely by hand. The stitching is also done by hand, a laborious process, since the layers of leather can reach up to 1/2″ in thickness. To reduce the price of the quiver, stitching can be replaced with rivets, which are equally sturdy but much less time-consuming. (For more information, see “customization options” below.)

– The dimensions are 18″ L x 9.5″ W. (46 x 24 cm)

– It holds up to 10 arrows, and can accommodate a shaft diameter up to 5/16″ (8mm). To increase the quiver’s holding capacity, you can opt to replace the mouthpiece with folded wool (another historical method for keeping arrows snug), or omit both.

– The attachment system is made from straps of 7-oz latigo and solid brass fittings. It is designed to hang from a belt, with two attachment points, hanging on the right side of the body with the arrows pointing to the rear. It comes with a removable strap that can anchor the lower end of the quiver to the wearer’s thigh, for which I will require the wearer’s thigh circumference at the time of purchase. (Please include that measurement in the buyer’s note.) It does not come with a belt, though one could be commissioned to match.

Customization options:

– For customers who do not like the mouthpiece that holds the arrows (as it limits the number of arrows the quiver can carry, requires a custom fit for thicker arrows, and takes more attention to load), it can be omitted and replaced with a sheet of wool folded inside the quiver, which was also a period-accurate method for holding arrows snug during mounted combat. (There is no extra charge for this, simply indicate your preference in the buyer’s note.)

– By default it is made to hang on the right side of the body; for a left-side quiver, request it in the buyer’s note.

– Quivers can be dyed in almost any color of the rainbow, at no extra cost; if you would like a different color, you can request it in the buyer’s note. Exceptions are: (1) white or other very pale pastel colors, which are possible, but since they must be dyed instead of painted, they are not guaranteed to be as durable, and (2) very precise color-matching. If you have an existing costume that you are purchasing the quiver for, you can show me pictures and I will do my best, but dyes are finicky and I cannot guarantee an exact match.

– For more a more economical option, you can request a quiver that has the Iznik designs but uses rivets instead of hand-stitching, which brings the price down to $320.

– If you have your own pattern you would like tooled on the quiver, contact me for a quote. A completely unadorned quiver starts at $150 (riveted) or $230 (hand-stitched), and the price increases with the complexity of the design.
